Abstract:Objective:Miniprobe sonography(MPS)was performed for evaluation of the normal structure of esophageal wall and of the TN staging of esophageal cancer. Methods:In vitro study,12 resected esophageal specimens were examined by a miniprobe 2.6mm in diameter in a water bath.In clinical study,28 patients with esophageal cancer were preoperatively examined by miniprobe sonography and the ultrasound findings were compared with histological findings in all cases. Results:In vitro study the normal esophageal wall was imaged as a five- layered structure by a 12 MHz probe and as a seven- layered structure by a 15MHz probe. In vivo study the total accuracy of T staging was 86% (sensitivity 86% and specificity 71% )and the overall accuracy of N staging was 71% (sensitivity 71% and specificity 73% ).Conclusions:The study shows that the high- frequency miniprobe can produce highresolution images of the esophageal wall which correlate with histopathologic structures and MPS is helpful in preoperative TN staging of esophageal cancer.
