【Abstract】 Objective To study the therapeutic effect of chemotherapy with DF regimen after radiotherapy for esophageal carcinoma. Methods From August 1994 to June 1996, a prospective randomized trial on chemotherapy with DF regimen after radiotherapy for esophageal carcinoma was carried out in 192 patients. Patients younger than 70 years, at least on semiliquid diet, were randomized into combined group (R+C , 96 patients) or radiotherapy alone group (R, 96 patients). 6MV photon was used for all patients, using 3 fields to deliver 60~70Gy. Chemotherapy was given every 3 weeks for 4~6 cycles after radiotherapy in R+C group. Both groups were followed for 3 years. Results The one, two and three-year survival rates were 61.5%(59/96), 44.8%(43/96), 34.4%(33/96) in R+C group and 45.8%(44/96), 31.3%(30/96), 18.8%(18/96) in R group, respectively. The survival rates in R+C group were much better than those in R group(P<0.05). The local control rates, 45.8% (44/96) in R+C group and 52.1% (50/96) in R group, had no difference (P>0.05) . But there was significant difference in distant metastasis between two groups,5.2%(5/96) in R+C group and 16.7%(16/96) in R group. R+C group was much lower than R group (P<0.05). The late injury of esophagus ,34.4%(33/96) in R+C group and 17.7% (17/96) in R group , was much higher in the former than that in the latter(P<0.01). Conclusions Chemotherapy with DF regimen after radiotherapy for esophageal carcinoma has good effect and is worth further studying in clinic.
